There are about 10,000 students and 6,000 of them are full-time. The Ural State Forest Engineering University offers studies leading to advanced degrees in the professional fields of forestry, ecology, engineering, economics, business, and tourism.
To meet the current needs, USFEU employs a competent, versatile, collaborative and creative academic staff.
Currently in the USFEU there are:
- more than 50 professors and doctors of sciences; a half of them are academicians and associate members of the public academies (engineering, natural and environmental sciences);
- more than 250 candidates of sciences (rough equivalent “Philosophy Doctors”) who are involved in wide range of research projects including international ones.
- 14 postgraduate programmes;
- two specialized dissertation councils to held a defense of candidate and doctor dissertations.
The university offers its programmes through 7 faculties:
- Wood Science and Technology
- Chemical Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Economics and Management
To provide working adults with local higher education options at convenient class times the Ural State Forest Engineering Universityhas established branches and representative offices at 7 locations across the Ural and West Siberian regions.
To enhance economic local development, global understanding, and advance in professional practice there are 4 institutes incorporated the university:
- Quality of Life
- Road construction
- Traffic safety
- Environmental Toxicology
Moreover, there are the following units:
- Ural information/consulting center for forestry and wood-based industries cluster
- educational training/consulting center ‘environmental safety’
- association of international logistics.
To promote teaching and studying opportunities there are the following facilities in the USFEU:
- Ural Educational Experimental Forest Plant,29,126 haincorporating a sawmill and several training and manufacturing workshops for internships;
- unique plant garden named after Vigorov L.I. consisted of about 400 species of plants containing natural dietary supplements;
- training workshops to gain practical skills during an academic year;
- well-equipped laboratories to conduct scientific researches;
- scientific library.
The Ural State Forest EngineeringUniversityhas developed a new model of a modern higher education establishment combining science and technology, academic knowledge and practical skills, and engaging people of different ages (continuous education through life) with different levels of education. To develop the innovative education model the following unites are established:
- Junior forest academy for school children;
- Institute of continuous education;
- Ural Forest Techno Park.
Alumni succeed in industries across the nation. They are employed in forestry and forest-based industries, road construction and automobile maintenance enterprises, chemical and environmental laboratories, scientific research institutions, in local municipal and governmental establishments; in both private and state enterprises.
To meet current challenges the USFEU has been developing international activities. The University is a member of the UIFRO, INTAS, has joined the Tempus Programme. We collaborate with education and research establishments in Belarus, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Cuba, Cyprus, theCzech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Hungry, India, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, and theUSA. Four colleagues in Switzerland and Slovakiareceived the titles of "Honorary Professor of the USFEU" and "Honorary Doctor of the USFEU." We develop international exchange programmes for academic study and internships. We welcome universities around the world for collaboration.
The USFEU is the pioneer in the voluntary forest certification in the Urals. USFEU meets the needs of society through focusing its research in areas of environmental protection, sequestering carbon, developing wood-based products, and waste management. That contributes to sustainable environment and ensures sustainable management of forest resources in the Ural region. USFEU scientists participate in developing regulations for local forestry. They are engaged into local government projects on modernization of forest-based industries, landscape construction and greening in Yekaterinburg and other cities and towns, ecological education, and environmental monitoring of enterprises.
"This way is long and hard but there is no any other way”.
Professor K. Semenov
Forest Engineering Faculty Dean
XVI cent. - beginning exploitation of the Ural forest for salt industry (13 thou. ha annually).
XVIII cent. – developing mining and metallurgical industries in the Urals required great amount of wood.
XIX cent. – Ural industries faced with the ever increasing shortage of wood because of incorrect logging. It was required to develop forestry as a science and train professionals in forestry.
1803 – the first Russian forestry school (become Forestry institute later) was established under Saint-Petersburg. First professionals for the Urals were trained there.
1896 – the first Ural school for training foresters was established in Talitsa (in Sverdlovsk region now).
1920 – the Ural state university was established in Ekaterinburg; the Engineering forest faculty was in its structure.
1922 - the Engineering forest faculty was transformed into the Chemical-Metallurgical faculty keeping Forestry branch. A famous professor K. Semenov insisted in 20s the Urals needed in great amount of forest professionals to use forest in sustainable manner so the faculty had to be kept as a separate unit and moreover it would be developed into a separate forest engineering institute over time. He wrote: “This way is long and hard but there is no any other way”.
1925 – the Ural industrial institute (UII, now USU) was established on the base of the Ural state university with the Forest industrial faculty in its structure. There were 4 branches at the faculty: forest industrial, forest transport, forest mechanical, and forest chemical. 225 students were taught.
1930 – the Ural forest engineering institute was established by the order of the Soviet government №1326 of May 5, 1930. This day is the official birthday of the modern Ural state forest engineering university (USFEU).
The Ural state forest engineering university (USFEU) was founded as the Ural forest engineering institute (UFEI) in 1930. It was developed on the base of the engineering forest faculty in the Ural industrial institute (now UFU). There were 4 branches with 138 students that time. Great contribution into the institute development was made during WWII. The UFEI was the only higher education establishment in the forestry, forest engineering and wood processing fields during WWII. Scientists and students from Belorussian forest engineering institute and Leningrad forest engineering academy were evacuated to the Urals and studied here since August, 1941. The academic staff was strengthened with excellent teachers and scientists. In the beginning 1942 the institute was allowed to offer post graduate programmes and dissertation defense board was created. There were 29 departments in the institute and 7 graduate degree programs were realized during the war time. 335 teachers and students joined the Red Army during WWII and 10 of them came back.
Peace time discovered new possibilities to develop for the university though at the same time it was a new challenge to meet due to economic, political and social situation in the country. The university had been developing research and educational facilities, new graduate programmes; new faculties were established.
Achievements of the university were recognized:
1977 - the university was awarded the certificate of Honour;
1978 - the university was awarded the name of Leninsky Komsomol;
1980 - the university was awarded the order of the Red Banner of Labour for training qualified specialists for forest-based industries.
Changing the status of the university was reflected in its name:
1930 - the Ural forest engineering institute;
1993 - the Ural forest engineering institute was renamed as the Ural state forest engineering academy;
2001 – the academy was renamed as the Ural state forest engineering university.
